I've used Netflix for over a year and I can tell you my experience.
You basically prepay for each month of service. At any time, you may change your membership to any of the programs listed below - but all program changes begin with your next month of service.

Netflix has a lot of distribution centers so there is probably one near your city. This means it takes about 1 day to mail back the DVD, and they usually mail your next DVD on the next day, and you'll get it the day after that. So its a 2-day turnaround. For example, mail the DVD on Monday (before mailman picks up the mail), they receive it on Tuesday and you get a new one in your mailbox on Wednesday.
Overall the service is good (including fastest turnaround in the business) and the website is great for browsing movies. You can go there and add a movie to your rental queue at any time. Right now mine has about 120 movies....
